* British History Online. A digital library of primary and secondary sources relating to British History.

* British National Archives. Searchable website of the British National Archives.

* Catalogue of the British Library. A searchable catalogue of the material held in the British Library.

* Catalogue of the National Library of Ireland. A searchable catalogue of material held in the National Library of Ireland.

* Hansard (1803-2005). British parliamentary debates online.

* House of Commons Parliamentary Papers. Database of British Parliamentary papers (subscription service).

* Justis. Library of British, Irish, EU and international case law and legislation (subscription service)

* Internet Archive. A library of historical collections in digital format.

* Irish History Online. An authorative database of Irish historical scholarship

* Irish Newspaper Archive. This is an online database of a collection of national and regional newspapers dating from 1700s (subscription service).

* Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. A biographical database of influential figures in the history of the British Isles.

There are a number of websites that contain databases of historical data. These are a listed below. The historical time frame of such data date from the very recent to the more distant past. However, it is difficult to get accurate historical data for many geographic areas before the 1600s.

* A good starting point is the digital research tools wiki which contains a list of research tools for researchers in the humanities and social sciences.

* Quantum gis is an opensource GIS. Shapefiles, made of 4 integrated files, are needed to use GIS software. It is possible to get modern shapefiles from National Censuses. A source of free shape files is the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. It provides some free international shapefiles and useful GIS information on its website.

* A useful tool for sharing files is dropbox, this lets you share documents across multiple locations. It is also useful for backing up files.
